Dave Foreman,

Fine piece of writing. You captured my thoughts exactly.

Years ago, while working on a project concerning Yosemite, including a plan for virtually total restoration of the Valley, I felt as if I'd fallen into a chasm between the two "visions" of the Park. Many in the community simply saw it as a cash cow (cash bear?) for their local businesses, so more people was a good thing and any other discussion was irrelevant. Many others saw it as pristine but damaged, as if the task was to repair it. I was surprised how few recognized the value of restoring it so the place, as a whole community of critters with visitors from time to time, could prosper by itself and with little or no help from us. In short, I witnessed that separation between human and nature as presented by the community. Nevertheless we found SC chapter support, plus concessionaire, plus two superintendents and many locals. Testifying before Congress was another matter...

Thanks again,
Christopher Swan

Just saw you speak at UNC Asheville, Dave, and thanks for doing so. The population issue came up during the Q & A and I was struck dumb by some younger EF! activists asserting that population was a non-issue! I had not heard anyone claiming to be an environmentalist ever disclaim population growth as THE major mechanism in habitat destruction. I've not read any of the material that supports such conjecture and don't intend to, just as I'd sidestep flat Earth theory. I'm looking forward to picking their minds a little and see how they've managed to make this idea fit. Also thanks for your trust and I'll resolve the book next! Ed in Asheville, NC.

Dear Dave

Thank you from the bottom of my black secular Darwinist Dawkins-partial heart. Apart from all that population stuff (only the most important subject in the world) I rather admired your ticking of the attack cats - 3 catz is of course uttlerly politically incorrect. I, as a responsible citizen, only possess (or should I say serve) two of these detestable parasites who kill native fauna and commit all manner of yawning, hardly pulling their weight. Only this morning, I was in conversation with one of them (Max, the male one, and therefore the breadwinner) and asking him how it felt to have finished his Christmas break and about to head back into the workforce in his capacity as a Branch Head in the Department of Feline Affairs. I asked him whether his Department was contemplating a new strategy to deal with The Mouse Problem in 2007, and whether an analysis of the new brand of Whiskas (which outrageously claims to cure cat cancer as well as keep their teeth in good condition) would be referred to the Feline Competition Commission. His answer was to miaow plaintively and look at the door, as though asking to be released from this pesky line of questioning. Anyhow, thanks so much for a BRILLIANT article and I am so glad you were able to bounce back from a burglary with such vigour. I sort of hope our species will be able to bounce back from the coming tsunami, since there are such as you (and my colleagues in Sustainable Population Australia, and Paul Ehrlich and Sir David Attenborough) among us. Sorry, I mean some of my colleagues in SPA - others are complete ratbags and make me wish the entire human pantomime were over ASAP. Such is the formation of denominations. Ah dear I drink too much. Goodingghtt!

Dave,
Thanks for saying the obvious. I've been banging my head on my desk with each omniously-toned newspaper article warning of declining birth-rates--even as we hit 300 million! Some papers even printed warnings about global warning right next to the warnings about population "decline." I thought I was losing it. My desk just couldn't take much more of a beating. Thanks for stating the obvious and letting me know there are rational people out there.
Maybe some of these newborns will grow up to be real journalists someday, and these frosted-hair nimrods with the tiny notebooks can retire.

Best

Mainstream media coverage of the supposed population "milestone" was more cheerleading than original reporting. Even state-level wildlife agencies (the Pennsylvania Game Commission?) are clueless as they struggle to find license revenue amid a shrinking fraternity of hunters while sprawl pushes further into wildlands (while pushing apart the tradition of hunting).
